Shantrice is co-facilitating the Body Talk: A Reproductive Justice Community of Practice Spring 2025
Shantrice King is a community-based midwife, women’s health nurse practitioner, and co-founder of HomeGurl HealthCare. Born and raised in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, Shantrice grew up in a family led by Black women and quickly developed a passion for sexual and reproductive health. She loves talking about menstruation, sexual health, and all things related to punanis (west indian slang for vulvas). Shantrice has spent many years learning from and with various Black communities about the health practices that keep them well.
From 2013-2016 Shantrice lived in Paris, France where she researched the impacts of immigration on the reproductive patterns of first and second-generation Malian women. She spent the 2022-2023 year doing a midwifery postgraduate fellowship in Segou, Mali where she established a postpartum care service cooperative with young Malian midwives. She has continued to advocate on matters of sexual and reproductive health as it relates to Black women and girls through her work with organizations such as the Black Feminist Project (formerly the BLK Projek), Planned Parenthood NYC, and Women's Voices for the Earth.
In addition to birth work, Shantrice loves listening to, reading, and telling stories about Black folks and culture. She publishes a monthly community newsletter, Punani News, where she shares stories from her midwifery journey. Shantrice holds a Master of Science in Nursing from Yale School of Nursing and a B.A from Carleton College in Women and Gender Studies.
